Super Mario RPG for the Switch is a remake of the original game for the SNES.
It focuses on Mario on the typical adventure saving Princess Peach from Bowser but as time goes by there is an even bigger threat than Bowser that he must stop.
The graphics are pretty decent and so was the throwback arts tyle too. The music was also very good. The game has a new easy mode feature, for newer jrpg fans. The gameplay is turned based and it set the standards to what you see in many jrpgs in the Mario series today.
The characters are excellent with Geno being the standout. Geno is by far one of the most colorful characters in Mario history given their flamboyant character. The game isn’t reliant on random battles, you just simply go up to the enemy and then battle starts.
The game has a new mechanic, where perfect timing can lead to all the enemies you can inflict damage to all the enemies you are currently fighting. You can use special abilities as you keep on doing well in combat. Once you level up, you have the chance to choose which stat you want to increase. Some of the puzzles can be pretty finicky, like the music puzzle where you really have to pay close attention to the tadpole music notes; one wrong move immediately means you have to restart all over again.
The game now has a bestiary to view the enemy types. The dungeons were pretty unique and interesting to explore. The platforming on the other hand, did feel sort of slippery in some sections because of the isometric view it utilizes. The game does have quite a bit of content to go through adding a lot of replay value. The localization itself not really the best, and personally I prefer the original game’s humor. All in all, Nintendo provided what fans wanted with this update and bringing an old classic to the current generation.
Overall, it was an excellent remake of a much loved game.
It gets 5 out of 5 stars.
