Avenger

Avenger is an original 2003 anime series animated by Bee Train and developed by Gimik; noted for series like Uta-Kata. Avenger was directed by Koichi Mashimo. It is set on a colonized city on Mars where humans and robots live together. Food and water is scarce and people have become infertile and are now using robot dolls as substitute for children. The story revolves around Layla, a gladiator who is on a journey to save Mars from the evil ruler Volk. Volk is responsible for many of the tragedies that has happened on Mars. Layla is accompanied by a Nei and Speedy.

The characters were generally ok and Layla reminded me somewhat of Samus Aran from the Metroid series with similar personalities and backgrounds. The chemistry between Layla and Nei, who is a doll, was good.

Since it can be seen as a cyberpunk it does have that dreary and bleak atmosphere and feel to it which was fitting. The action in the series was good but not up to what Bee Train is capable of. The series was a bit on the short side and needed some more action scenes.

The anime was short with just 13 episodes. There were some unresolved threads like what really happened to Layla after the final encounter. The series would have been more engaging with more episodes

The animation was very good and the voice acting serviceable. The music by Ali Project was also pretty good too and added to the overall enjoyment of the series.

Overall, Avengers was an enjoyable experience.

It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
