Cyberpunk Edgerunners is an anime based on the video game by CD Projekt Red, but you don’t need to be familiar with the game to enjoy Edgerunners.
It focuses on David Martinez living in Night City, a very violent and dangerous place. The city suffers from rampant crime and corruption and the lives of ordinary citizens are not worth much.
Like the game, the anime focuses on survival and how people try to make the best out of the untenable situation they find themselves. The show illustrates how corporate greed damages society and how others stand up to it atypical of a cyberpunk.David has to be become an Edgerunner, a type of mercenary in Night City to survive as his mother was recently killed by some thugs by accident during a gang shootout in a highway. David seems to lose his humanity as he kills more bodymods, humans with robotic enhancements.
The artstyle is faithful to the original game but you can see that Studio Trigger has provided their own vision and it works really well. The animation was also incredible and the voice acting was more than adequate. I enjoyed the music so the overall effect to animation and sound was very enjoyable. It’s fairly short with just 10 episodes so the pacing was pretty hectic with non stop action.
Overall, it was and excellent anime and definitely worth the time.
It gets 5 out of 5 stars.
