smt nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne III is the third entry within the mainline smt games and also this particular version I'm covering is the remaster version.
It focuses on the demi fiend and their journey throughout the post apocalyptic tokyo called the vortex world and determining its fate too.
The story is pretty minimalistic its just you on your own versus the rest of the dangers thats within. Its oriented around chaos whereas smt iv and apocaylpse focus around the neutral routes where it really is true and honestly canon at least to me that both sides are fucking dogshit from dictorial gods in disguise or overtly evil either way.
An optional location separate from the Vortex World is the Amala Labyrinth, accessed after the Protagonist has reached a certain point in the story. The Labyrinth is a dungeon divided into multiple floors or Kalpa, each housing both demon enemies and brokers who sell demons to the Protagonist. Each Kalpa is connected by a Warp Zone, in which the Protagonist can collect currency and items while avoiding or destroying obstacles. Proceeding through the levels of the Labyrinth requires the protagonist to find and fight Fiends carrying Candelabra, which unlock barriers. The Candelabra also act as a means of locating and either engaging or avoiding Fiends.
Atmosphere wise it is the best out of any shin megami tensei game as even today it still feels just beyond eerie and just literally death at any given corner not really much so actually as difficulty wise its toned down a great deal especially considering the infamous matador fight.
Gameplay atypical turned based stuff of an smt game but it has the press turn system that you will see in many shin megami tensei related games these days where exploiting weakness or critical blows means extra turns and vice versa for enemies.
You can fuse and negotiate demons and fight them through the random encounter system that gets really annoying and not just that there’s also the annoying amount of backtracking and getting sidetracked alot be it from the filler or map design at the time the game came out in.
The economy of the game is pretty limited its either items or acessories fitting considering the nature of this game.
Theres also equiping magatama which basically gives you unique bonuses and abilties to help you throughout the journey.
Magatama will sometimes act violently within the Protagonist, creating different effects depending on the Magatama equipped
The voice acting is bland and the characters its shin megami tensei of course at this point its dogshit dialogue choices thats never going to matter and characters are as tropey and flat as they can get and the re-worked dialogue too its as lolcowlized as one expects it to be.
The game has a really bizarre choice using on disc/cartridge dlc paying for stuff that was already in the base games of the ps2 version decades ago.
The music of the game is incredible too.
Overall it was a decent game.
It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
This game indirectly like mgs is pretty much the rise of pseduo intelectualism on the internet where lolcows use games like these just to flex how above it all to weebs and look down on them yet ironically do the same “silly” uwu shit that they accuse weebs of doing too especially on places like reddit or discord or twitter and god, be glad if you’re like me and just keep away from fandoms at all fucking times than have to share a fanbase with these lolcows period.
