Magic Knight Rayearth is an anime adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Clamp. It focuses on three girls who are transported to another world while on a field trip to Tokyo Tower. The girls are unknown to each other, but they must join together to restore order to this once peaceful place called Cephiro. They learned that an evil high priest has imprisoned the princess causing chaos in the land. The three girls are given powerful mechs to help them fight the powerful forces of evil.
The concept of it is pretty unique and not often done in either Isekai or Mecha genre even to this day. There are some elements of classical RPGs for in the storytelling. The animation is decent and the art is quite good both Mecha and character designs. The characters were ok and the action scenes were well done. The music was also quite good.
The anime strays somewhat from the original story from time to time. The atmosphere is not as melancholic or grim as other Clamp works. The anime doesn’t cover the entire story since the manga was still ongoing at the time. It follows the same themes as many other Clamp works, most notably, defying the bleak destiny one is given similar to what x/1999 has showcased.
