Dot Hack Roots is the prequel anime to the Dot Hack/Gu games during Haseo’s first year and a sequel to the other entries of previous Dot Hack anime.
It focuses on Haseo and his friends before the events of Dot Hack/GU on their adventures particularly during Ovan’s part in finding the mysterious twlight key which is seen as something of an urban myth within players and it does showcase the element of players going into comas like in the gu games.

Haseo here is certainly alot more idealistic and curious initially yet, somewhat kinda self defeatist especially with the new update of the world where theres alot of player killers around ruining the fun for others.
Tabby just like in the games yeah her genki girl gimmick does come off as pretty cringey and annoying af after a while.
The anime does show his descent into the infamous edgelord thats just beyond insufferable to be around as time goes by the more it progresses.

Tonalwise its not really that focused on cheesiness in comparison to Legend Of The Twilight.
Its fairly lengthy with about 26 episodes to the anime.
Like with other Dot Hack anime entries, its by Bee Train.
The art is pretty decent and so was the animation of it for its time.
Pacing wise it does take its time to, really get things going kind of like the games itself and lot of filler that just felt sort of out place of the story.
The music is pretty good.
Overall it was an alright anime.
It gets 3 out of 5 stars.
