Dot hack/sign is an anime original entry based on the dothack series.Â
It focuses on Tsukasa a player in the world and their experiences and adventures while exploring the world and they find themselves unable to log out of their account and they must find out why they can’t be able to do so too.Â
The real world segments have a  bleak staticy feel to it which is pretty unique.Â
The pacing is incredibly slow and it just often feels like the plot isn’t really going anywhere its been a series problem as a whole in general really and its pretty much a huge factory why along with the Japan only negatively received later games is why the series is on ice by bandai these days.Â
This story is more so character driven and action scenes are few and in between and the action itself isn’t really that impressive either.Â
The story themes of how one handles escapism and the psychological effects of it was pretty interesting to explore.Â

The anime does provide alot of background info into the world of the games so thats good.Â
The characters themselves are meh as meh can get, i did liked Bear considering how he was the most level headed and reasonable out of the cast. B.T i just found an annoying miserable modern women type that you could see on cringecasts like Whatever or Call Her Daddy and the ilk like that.Â
Tsukasa the main character is somewhat more sympathetic than Haseo or Sora considering this is before version 2 of the world was out considering how Tsukasa goes through alot of shit in the real world unlike Haseo/Sora whos just a spoiled anti social rich kid with nothing better to do.Â
Knowing the character driven nature of the story unfortunately, there is going to be moments of running around with nothing but bickering that goes nowhere from here and there.Â
The music was good.Â
The art and animation was fine too.Â
Overall it was an alright anime.Â
It gets 3 out of 5 stars.Â
