High School Of The Dead is an anime adaptation of the manga series “Apocalyptic Academy: Highschool of the Dead”.

It focuses on a group of high school students who must survive a zombie apocalypse. The students have to join forces in order to survive as they search for their loved ones in the suddenly chaotic society.

The anime is short and just like the manga that was cancelled, there are many unresolved plot points and loose ends because of the original mangaka dying.

The characters were bland and uninteresting and they made a lot of impulsive decisions. The story also focuses somewhat on the overused trope of humans being the real monsters and the zombies are just victims. What passes as comedy seems forced. It was more distracting than funny and did not fit in the horrors of the situation.

The anime is notorious for its fanservice, for ecchi, I could understand since its one of the prime elements for that genre, but here it just went out of control causing tonal dissonance in a situation full of chaos and horror. The zombies are mindless and stereotypical in comparison to other zombie-oriented media, that have some intelligence and move with speed and agility.

The action is bloody and gruesome but predictable as you know by now the main cast is going to survive. The art and animation are generally fine while the music overall was enjoyable.

Overall, this was a below average anime.

It gets 2 out of 5 stars.
