Omega Quintet

Omega Quintet is an idol simulator JRPG hybrid by Idea Factory. It focuses on Verse, the J-pop music group, (no relation to the Vtuber agency of the same name) who has to hunt down monsters that have taken over most of the world. Humanity last hope are these pop stars.

The concept itself is interesting and not something done often in jrpgs. The problem is that there is just so many tropes after tropes especially since this was around the time Date A Live was getting pretty popular. It feels unoriginal and copies many of the mid 2010 era anime.  The combat is turn based; basically defeat the enemies and sometimes form combos to take them down quicker. The skills and abilities of the game are all intershared with the party members, meaning everyone has the same skills they can use which is pretty baffling. Usually in jrpgs, everyone has their own unique talents as this makes for a more complete and formidable fighting unit.

The battles can monotonous too due to the monsters being damage sponges. Also, the monsters appear to be reskins with different abilities. There is quite a bit of filler in the game and sometimes you could get locked out of the main quest if you accidentally miss any side quest that is required for story progression. Quest descriptions were not that helpful either and were vague on where you were supposed to go. The game has a feature where your party members outfits get destroyed, the more damage they take. It is only really there for fanservice reasons like Parasite Eve: The Third Birthday and it can cause quite the hassle in combat knowing how some enemies can be cheap and overpowered from time to time. You can raise your bond and weapon proficiencies of the characters but like the rest of the game itself, it’s going to take quite a while to do so. You can create and craft items through the workshop and even customize the looks of the Verse idols too. You can even edit and customize music videos of the Verse idol performing.

There is also a lot of recycled assets between other Idea Factory games from Fairy Fencer to Neptunia and the environment design feels no different to Neptunia.

The characters themselves are bland and not really that interesting. The game has multiple endings, but it is very specific on how and what, and especially where to do the right things in order to get the actual ending of the game. It highly recommended to look up a guide. There graphics and art were adequate while the music was ok.

Overall, this was an average game.

It gets 3 out of 5 stars.

The game really had a good amount of promise to it, and had it gotten original built from scratch assets and cut out the filler and grinding part of the game it could have been a pretty good jrpg.
