tengoku strayside

Tengoku Struggle Strayside is an Otome visual novel by Idea Factory. The story is about Rin Enma, the adopted daughter of the king of the underworld on the hunt from escapees. She has four sinners to accompany her and together they must forget their mutual mistrust in order to recapture the escapees. The story is something of a slow burner as it can take quite a bit of time before you can really make decisions and for things to really get going. It is set in the unspecified year of xx during the Reiwa era of Japan.

Its interactivity is mainly the choice of dialogue. The artstyle and character designs were pretty good. The music was generally fine and the voice acting was serviceable.

The characters were repulsive as expected from a Demon cast. The dialogue was edgy and not for the faint of heart. The comedy in the game can be pretty out there and the game does not take itself too seriously. You do learn more of the characters pasts like why and how they ended up in hell in the first place. Each decision point presents two choices, each marked as either “Happy” or “Bad.” In my experience, achieving a “Bad” end typically only necessitates selecting one “Bad” choice. You have the option to disable these markers in the game’s Options menu.

Rin Enma reminds me somewhat of a grown-up version of Ai Enma from hell girl.

There is a fair amount of replay value with unlocking more routes as the game progress. There are extra contents as well like viewing character reports and a customizable, menu screen.

Overall, it was a decent visual novel.

It gets 4 out of 5 stars.
