Angel Beats

Angel Beats is an anime series created by P.A Works in collaboration with KEY members Na-Ga and Jun Maeda. The story is a unique mix of fantasy, action and music which is very interesting. Theres also a main focus on the preciousness of life and its meaning to others. The anime focuses on teenager Ontonashi Yuzuru who wakes up in a mysterious world and he later finds out that he has recently died but for unknown reasons from Yuri, someone he meets in the afterlife, but the afterlife he is in looks like a high school. Ontonashi can only remember his name but nothing else.

(BANG!)

Yuri tells him that she leads the Shinda Sekai Sensen (Afterlife Battlefront) and wages war against a girl named Tenshi. Unable to believe Yuri's claims that Tenshi is evil, Otonashi attempts to speak with her, but the encounter doesn't go as he intended. Otonashi decides to join the SSS and battle Tenshi, but he finds himself oddly drawn to her. While trying to regain his memories and understand Tenshi, he gradually unravels the mysteries of the afterlife. In order to be reincarnated members of the SSS, must face the trials of what the afterlife has in store for them and how they ended up in the afterlife as well too.

(I actually listening to crow song on repeat while i was writing this)

To start with the art style looks really good and the character designs were outstanding. The characters were personable and very likeable for the most part. The background designs were nicely detailed and the animation was excellent. The musical score was very with the song Crow Song being a standout. Overall, the action was intense and the level of details on the weaponry was marvelous. The comedic elements hit the right notes for the most part. There was its share of emotional moments as well to balance out the comedy too.

The anime had its fair share of flaws and it was mainly caused due to production issues as there was supposed to be 24 episodes but due to financial reasons it got cut down to 13 episodes.

A lot of the backstories for the characters were either cut out or not fully developed. The pacing was very rushed because of the short number of episodes. The story also had a lot of plotwists as well too and the finale was bittersweet but satisfying all the same.

The concept of the anime was strange but very interesting. The show was good but it could have been way better had it not suffered from the production issues.

It gets 3 out of 5 stars

A reboot with the full 24 episodes would be really good.
