Crystar

Crystar is a video game by Gemdrops the developers of the Star Ocean 2nd remake and Fuyru.

The story was written by the Kanon and Sola writer Naoki Hisaya and the story i have to say its a really interesting one.

It focuses on Rei Hatada who caused the death of her sibling by accident and must find a way to revive her from purgatory.

The game revolved around the action of “crying” and you look through the deaths of the deceased through their tears in purgatory too and its some pretty intense stuff too.

The broody and spooky atmosphere was excellent.

The game also has an outside feature where you can powerup your weapons and equipment through the tears you found and also spend time with Rei’s pet dog too.

The game has all of the previously released dlc so thats good.

The animation opening by SHAFT also directed by the bakemonogatari director was well done same can’t exactly be said for the in game animations as it just felt low budget.

The gameplay combat itself, its simple and fun not really deep but mind numbing after a while.

As time goes by you get other characters to play with their own unique playstyles too.

The music was pretty good.

The art and graphics were good too.

The dungeons do feel like a slog to go through as time goes by otherwise i did appreciate how mainly straight forward they were and not like smt strange journey.

The Peddler appears during dungeons and the items they get are quite limited to just stuff you can use to upgrade and modify your equipment no other healing items thats just it.

It gets worse when in later on during the game you have to go through alot of the dungeons again too.

Lot of the enemies can be quite the damage sponges too and were more or less reskins.

There were some technical hiccups here and there as a result of the switch port.  Best to play the game on easy mode because of how much of a grindfest it can be especially annoying with how some enemies give you debuffs until you purify them at the end of the dungeon for modification and updgrades of weapons

The game had alot of dialogue choices in the end that didn’t really matter a symptom of so many jrpgs especially ones like smt/persona.

There is some replay value to it with the multiple endings.

Overall it was an alright game.

It gets 3 out of 5 stars.

BTW, the copy of this game i got from vgp so heres the link if interested in the version i have.

(also for the ps4 too)
