Death End Re;quest Code Z is a spinoff that Is part of the Deaths End series of games. This format utilizes a roguelike format in contrast to the turn based elements of the games where you avoid traps and defeat enemies as quickly as you can to reach to the end. The normal difficulty mode is useful for newcomers to the roguelike genre. The game takes place in a parallel world.

It focuses on Sayaka Hiwatari, who must save the main cast from the games while also recover from their amnesia and discover the truth behind the events happening. Its best to play the previous games before to get a better idea of what is going on with the story. The storyline is just a filler arc with a lot of odd pacing issues and you’re really better off waiting for the third game especially with the parrel universe elements that only just add an unneeded element of confusion.

The art and music were generally fine. The graphics did not age well as a result of Idea Factory asset recycling, and you can experience the occasional slowdowns.

The game has a unique way of gaining skill points basically, you have to die through the infamous Death Ends where you go through gruesome text messages with some images of Sayaka being consumed alive digitally by enemies, or her being killed by traps.

There is even double Death Ends where you and your partner could die in a gruesome manner. The escort missions at the end of each level is incredibly grating and more time consuming than it ought to be. It is also incredibly grindy. Leveling up only increases your health, you have to find upgrade patches to increase your stats.

Not helping is the sanity meter which is incredibly sensitive initially and can drop very quickly. Low sanity level causes some vision and other health issues.

If you fall in a trap, the level drops rapidly so you have to be aware of the meter.

You can increase the sanity level by leaving the dungeons or by using Ether Codes which can be found in dungeons. After a while of defeating enemies you can use vanquish form to deal powerful blows to them.

Overall this was not a good game due to its poorly designed system.

It gets 2 out of 5 stars.
